Real Salt Lake's youngest-ever player, Jeffrey Dewsnup, has filed a $100M lawsuit against the team, alleging physical, emotional, and sexual abuse while on the team. Dewsnup joined RSL after attending the RSL Academy in 2019 and was officially signed in 2021, when he was 16 years old. He was the youngest-ever player to sign with the team, and he retired from the team in 2022, at the age of 18. The lawsuit alleges that Dewsnup was bullied and sexually harassed by players and coaches while on the team, including being hit with a ball from behind while nude by Aaron Herrera, Tate Schmitt, and Justin Glad. Dewsnup reportedly felt uncomfortable sharing the locker room with adult players and began taking anti-anxiety medication to cope with the situation. RSL's goalkeeper coach, Ignacio Hernandez, is also named in the lawsuit for allegedly acting aggressively toward Dewsnup and mishandling his injuries. The lawsuit states that despite Dewsnup's family reporting the abuse to RSL coaches and general manager, nothing changed. Dewsnup attempted to leave the team in 2022, but the lawsuit claims that RSL tried to persuade him to stay. The lawsuit seeks $100M in damages for Dewsnup's alleged abuse and emotional distress. Real Salt Lake has released a statement denying the allegations and stating that they will vigorously defend themselves through the legal process.
